NEW AMD Zodiac model XLi expands "operating instructions" to include Night and IFR

To the AMD team:

“IFR, N807HA, CH60/G” - "This is from the first three boxes on my flight plan 3/4/07 leaving EZM to take my new Zodiac XLi home to Virginia.  What a great airplane!  The Garmin stack and the auto pilot worked flawlessly!  The first leg into RCZ, Rockingham/ Richmond County, NC was flown at 5,000’, and for most of the 2.2 hour flight hands off watching the auto pilot do its thing.  The other leg to FVX, Farmville, VA, took 1.7 hours in continuous moderate to occasional severe turbulence.  N807HA handled it fine, very responsive to corrections.  Other than a huge helicopter, I think my Zodiac may have been the only plane to land at FVX that day after the direct crosswinds got up.  My trip from Heart of Georgia to Heart of Virginia was a wonderful adventure in a well designed and professionally built airplane.  The beautiful plane drew a large crowd in the cold winds at the fuel pumps before I put it in a hangar between two jets.  The jet pilot who offered me the hangar space was obviously impressed and seemed to be envious of my panel.  Thanks, AMD" (John, Garry, Terry, & Nancy)! Howard Anderson, above far left photo with John Degonia (AMD's sales manager and test pilot).

"I just wanted to let you know how pleased I am so far with my new Zodiac CH601 XLi (N601GH). Everywhere I go other pilots comment on the styling and high quality workmanship. I am most pleased with how it performs. It climbs at 1000fpm at gross, is very stable in rough air, handles crosswinds better than anything I have flown, and doesn't get "mushy" in slow flight. I have flown two other LSA's, but the Zodiac is much more like a "real airplane" than a typical LSA.  John, thanks again to you, Garry, Terry, Nancy, and the staff at AMD for the effort put into my airplane. I look forward to seeing you when my  "free" annual is due". Greg Hopkins (Greg purchased the first BRS equipped Zodiac).

"Hi Garry -  I want to thank you and AMD (Terry, John, and Nancy) for the marvelous support given to me during my first year as a Zodiac owner.  You were timely and supportive on any and all concerns and forthright on all warranty concerns. I couldn't be more pleased with you and the company.  The plane performs as described in the advertisement and has been a great teacher to me in the art of aviation.  I now say that I am more comfortable flying that plane on a bumpy day than driving in rush hour traffic.  I had three years of experience flying before the Zodiac but I didn't become a pilot until I started flying the Zodiac.  I am most pleased with my choice of accessories and instrument layout.  Please feel free to mention me as a satisfied customer!  With warm regards" Herb Siegel N623HS

"I want to let all of you ( Mathieu, John, Garry, Terry and Nancy) know how much I appreciate the quality effort you put into my Zodiac XL. I am totally delighted with the airplane! From the demo flight with John I knew it would handle well but I was quite surprised to witness the high quality workmanship in the my finished product and the cooperation in tailoring to my specific preferences (black panel)" Ted Haller (N620TH) picked up his beautiful Zodiac middle of August 2006 (above photo far right).

"I took delivery of my Zodiac in September 2006. This is the easiest aircraft I've ever learned to fly since I received my license in 1979. AMD's service has been nothing short of perfect. My Zodiac has given new life to my flying and has allowed me to share my passion with my sons. I did a lot of research into the different SLSA's and found that the Zodiac was the least expensive to insure and operate. Keep up the good work!!" "Sincerely, Phillip Stacy, N602BS

"I accepted delivery of my new Zodiac XL SLSA on 11/01/06.  I was more than pleased with the color scheme, workmanship and flying quality.  I have flown F-86, F-100 jet fighters, Comanchies, Skyhawks, Taylorcraft, Aeronica Champs, J-3 Cubs, RV-4 and RV-8 but the Zodiac is the most stable of any I have flown.  It is virtually impossible to get the Zodiac into an unsafe situation.  the paint and decal work are better than any I have seen recently, the AMD staff was very helpful in deciding on a color scheme.  Pride in workmanship is evident from every AMD employee.  I was very pleased with all the employees offering to help with explanations on construction details.   I looked at many Light Sport airplanes at Sun and Fun this year but none could compare with the Zodiac on price and quality.  I was excited to get back home to Sanford, N.C. so I could show off my sporty looking "Yellow Bird"." Amazing,  classic and fun, at a fraction of the cost!

The Zodiac is the perfect Light Sport Aircraft. With more than 1,000 flying around the world, it is a proven design: Sleek and sporty, yet tough, simple and reliable.

AMD is now also offering the very popular all-metal Zodiac as a fully certified SLSA.

The Zodiac is ideally suited for the Light Sport Aircraft (LSA) category: It's maximum take-off weight (MTOW) and top speed are maximized for the LSA category; It is all-metal, similar to a Piper or Cessna aircraft, and uses the very popular Continental 0-200 (100 HP) engine, as with the Cessna 150.

With the same certified engine, the all-aluminum Zodiac S-LSA is roomier, has better visibility and easily out-performs the Cessna 150. These features will please both pilots and mechanics!

Design History:

The original Zodiac model was designed by renowned aeronautical engineer Chris Heintz in the mid-eighties. The design has been a popular kit-plane ever since, marketed and produced in the US by Zenith Aircraft Company. Today, more than 1,000 Zodiac aircraft are successfully flying around the world, in all kind of environments and applications. Over the years, the Zodiac design has evolved, especially as it was adapted to meet differing rules and regulations on various continents. The design was first certified as a ready-to-fly aircraft in Canada, then in Europe, then in South America. It is now also manufactured in the USA as a factory-assembled ready-to-fly aircraft; built to the new ASTM LSA standards.

Our Zodiac model was upgraded to take full advantage of the new FAA Light Sport (LSA) rules in 2004. The US-made Zodiac XL and XLi are not the same as Zodiac models manufactured in other countries. In Europe, for example, the gross weight of the Zodiac is only 450 kg. The tougher USA version of the Zodiac built by AMD has a gross weight of 600 kg (1,320 lbs) and has a higher safety design margin: It has a sturdier all-metal landing gear system, a different control system, the Continental 0-200 engine, a certified propeller and much, much more... The continuously evolving Zodiac design is just one more example of Heintz's commitment to offering recreational pilots worldwide an optimized and modern yet affordable Light Sport aircraft.

Chris Heintz has been a tireless advocate and supporter of sport aviation and recreational flying at all levels for over 35 years; The Zodiac S-LSA is only one of more than 15 successful aircraft designs by Mr. Heintz.

New structural tests again confirms the structural strength of the XL.

Tests were approved and witness by an independent structural engineer.
