New
Structural load tests on the Zodiac XL
AMD of Eastman GA in partnership with Chris Heintz, designer of
the Zodiac XL, recently completed a new set of structural load
tests. In this series of tests, the XL airframe (wings fuselage
and stabilator) were taken to Ultimate load in the negative g's.
Tests were approved and witnessed by an independent structural
engineer.
Built tough! Zenith Aircraft has a Zodiac XL factory
demonstrator (N9601Z) which has logged over 1,000 hours
(The airframe is identical to the AMD Zodiac XL).
The aircraft has crisscrossed the United States dozens of times
through all kinds of conditions. Zenith flies well over 300 demo
flights per year in this aircraft; that's over 1,800 passengers
over the last 6 years. Additionally, over 15,000 people have
taken a seat in this aircraft over the years at different shows
and fly-ins, as well as at the factory. The plane flies as well
today as it did when it was new. It is estimated that more than
1,000 XLs are flying around the world.
The Zodiac is ideally suited for the S-LSA category. Like the
venerable Cessna-150, it is all-metal and uses the very popular
Continental 0-200 (100 HP) engine.
